As an alternative I can help you to rent a fully equipped and furnished apartment in Rio, take a look at my page about rent an apartment. Renting an apartment is normally much cheaper than staying at a hotel if you are a group/family or if you intend to stay more than one week in Rio.
In Rio it is difficult to find available accommodation with short notice during the carnival. Please book well in advance or be prepared to pay high prices for what you can find.

Design Hotel Portinari, inaugurated 2004
The name of the hotel is taken from a known Brazilian artist, Candido Portinari, 1903-1962, http://www.portinari.org.br. It is based on a new concept within the hotel industry. Ten of Brazil's top architects and designers were invited to bring their unique creativity to different parts of the hotel. Each one of the different floors was assigned a different architect making every floor of the building a very special experience. The hotel is located at Rua Fransisco Sa 17, Copacabana near Ipanema, in the corner of Rua N.S. Copacabana, 50 m from the beach. The rooms are equipped with Internet connection, cable-TV, DVD (in Brazil we have a different region code than USA/Europe) and electronic safe. The hotel has gym, bubble pool, sauna and a business center.
Currently (July 2004) the hotel has a special offer for both single and double room with breakfast and service fee included. Transfer in and out is included in the price for guests staying more than two nights.

Royal Rio Palace Hotel, inaugurated 2004
Located in Rua Duvivier 82, Copacabana, two blocks from the beach and one block from the underground. The rooms are equipped with Internet connection, cable-TV, radio and electronic safe. The hotel has gym, two pools, sauna (dry and steem) and a business center. Breakfast is included in the prices below.
