Carnival

Origin

The origin of the word comes from the latin words "carne" (meat) and "vale" (farewell),in other words, faewell to the meat. Originaly the three days of festivities before ashwendsday when the Lenting starts, 46 days before eastern. In portugues the Lenting is caled quaresma from quadragesima, fortieth. The Lenting period last for 40 days until the Easter Day, when Jesus revived, and does not include sundays as they are not Lenting days. In english those three days are called Shrovetide (from "to shrive", or hear confessions). The reason for the English custom of eating pancakes before the Lenting was orginaly to using up the eggs which were prohibited during Lenting. For the same reason we are eating a lot of eggs during the Eastern.
